Life Sciences

Keep scientific context attached to every dataset.

Design scientific data foundations that preserve provenance, make information discoverable, and support analysis across research systems.

The challenge

Raw records and conclusions need different homes.

Instrument files and analysis outputs become harder to reuse when metadata, ownership, and processing history live elsewhere.

Implementation considerations

Make the boundaries explicit.

01

Separate raw records from interpretations

Preserve source data and capture transformations as versioned processing steps. Link derived datasets to their inputs so teams can understand how an analytical result was produced.

02

Model the context that matters

Agree identifiers, units, schemas, access rules, and ownership with scientists and data stewards. Catalog entries should help a researcher decide whether a dataset is suitable for a particular question.

03

Make quality visible

Validate required metadata and file integrity at ingestion. Route incomplete records to an exception queue and track schema changes. The platform should expose uncertainty rather than silently normalize it away.

Technical perspective

The architecture behind the work.

Versioned storage is what lets a curated dataset be traced back to the file it came from.

Scope the first step

Before the first commitment.

Where should raw instrument output live?

Separately from anything derived from it. Raw records keep their own storage and version history, so an interpretation can be traced back to the file it came from and re-derived when methods change.
